SOLOPROTECT® IPE80 Posts: Embedded or Base-Plated
A robust solution for configurations requiring improved resistance to local rotation
When designing an industrial protection system, the post profile must be selected according to the installation configuration, expected loads and available civil engineering structure.
The SOLOPROTECT® range includes IPE80 steel posts, particularly suitable for configurations where improved resistance to local post rotation is required.
Thanks to its more balanced and symmetrical I-section compared with an open C-section profile, the IPE80 provides improved load distribution and reduces sensitivity to rotation under certain lateral or eccentric loads.
Two fixed installation principles are available:
-
IPE80 post embedded or driven into a concrete foundation;
-
IPE80 base-plated post mechanically or chemically anchored to existing concrete.
Why choose an IPE80 post?
The geometry of the section plays an important role in the behaviour of a post when subjected to lateral loads.
An open C-section is asymmetrical. Depending on the direction of the applied force and the fixing configuration, eccentric loading may generate a greater tendency towards local rotation.
The IPE80 profile, with its I-shaped section, provides a more symmetrical geometry.
This configuration can help to:
-
provide a more balanced section;
-
improve the distribution of certain lateral loads;
-
reduce eccentricity between the applied load and the section;
-
improve resistance to local rotation in specific installation configurations.
The IPE80 can therefore be preferred when controlling post rotation is an important design criterion.
IPE80 post embedded in concrete
The embedded IPE80 post is suitable for installations where a concrete foundation can be created to receive the profile directly.
The post is embedded into the concrete to provide a permanent in-ground installation.
This configuration is particularly suitable for:
-
new installations;
-
sites without an existing concrete slab suitable for base-plate anchoring;
-
permanent protection systems;
-
installations exposed to lateral loads;
-
areas where local post rotation needs to be better controlled.
IPE80 base-plated post
Where an existing concrete slab, ground beam or sufficiently dimensioned concrete foundation is available, the IPE80 can be supplied as a base-plated post.
This configuration enables the post to be fixed directly onto the existing civil engineering structure without embedding the profile into the ground.
The base plate can be secured using mechanical or chemical anchors, selected according to the characteristics of the concrete and the loads to be transferred.
IPE80 or C-section post: which one should you choose?
There is no single profile suitable for every application.
The choice should be based on the project configuration and the loads to which the protection system may be subjected.
When should an IPE80 post be considered?
An IPE80 post is particularly relevant where:
-
lateral loads may act on the protection system;
-
loads may be eccentric;
-
local post rotation needs to be limited;
-
a base-plated configuration requires a more balanced section;
-
operating conditions justify greater rotational stiffness.
When is a C-section still appropriate?
A C-section post can remain perfectly suitable:
-
for straightforward configurations;
-
for embedded or driven installations;
-
where rotational loads are limited;
-
where simplicity is a primary design consideration.
The choice between C100, C125 and IPE80 should therefore be made according to the site environment, protection geometry and specific project requirements.
Part of the modular SOLOPROTECT® system
IPE80 posts can be combined with the various components of the SOLOPROTECT® range to create a protection system tailored to the site configuration.
A complete installation can combine:
straight horizontal rails + curved rails + IPE80 posts + connection components + bolting + suitable anchors.
This modular approach enables the creation of both straightforward protection lines and more complex configurations around:
-
buildings;
-
machinery;
-
technical equipment;
-
storage areas;
-
traffic routes;
-
sensitive infrastructure.
A finish designed for industrial environments
IPE80 posts are manufactured from S235 steel and protected by hot-dip galvanising in accordance with ISO 1461.
This finish contributes to the durability of the components in environments such as:
-
factories;
-
warehouses;
-
logistics platforms;
-
distribution centres;
-
car parks;
-
technical infrastructure;
-
outdoor installations.
Anchoring and civil engineering: verification is essential
For base-plated IPE80 posts, the indicated anchor characteristics should be considered as general configuration guidelines.
Final anchor design should take into account:
-
concrete strength;
-
slab or foundation thickness;
-
edge distances;
-
anchor spacing;
-
existing joints;
-
the type of mechanical or chemical anchor;
-
loads transferred to the base plate;
-
actual operating conditions.
Compatibility between the protection system, anchors and existing civil engineering structure must be verified for each project.
SOLOSAR helps you select the right post
Based on a layout drawing, dimensioned sketch or photographs of your installation, the SOLOSAR team can help determine the most suitable solution:
C100 – C125 – IPE80 – embedded post – base-plated post.
To assess your configuration, please provide where possible:
-
the total length to be protected;
-
the required protection height;
-
ground conditions;
-
details of the existing concrete structure;
-
equipment or areas requiring protection;
-
vehicle and material-handling traffic constraints;
-
available dimensions;
-
photographs of the installation area.
